How to Make a Silent Film

Step 1: Open Project

Open a new or pre-existing project.

Step 2: Import Clips

Select File, Import, and then select the video and audio files that you wish to import (your video and your silent film piano music).

Step 3: Make a Title and End Slide

Select Title and then hold the cursor over the New Title arrow until another window appears. Select Default Still. Do this twice. Then, in the pane where the clips and title/end slides are sitting, select each slide and add text as desired.

Step 4: Put Clips on Timeline

Click and drag the clips and title/end slides onto the timeline in the desired order.

Step 5: Cut Clips

Cut your video and audio slips using the razor tool by first selecting the razor tool, then clicking where on the clip (in the timeline) you would like to cut clips. Then delete unnecessary clips.

Step 6: Add Video Effects

Select the arrow next to Video Effects, and then select the arrow right next to Color Correction. Click on the word Tint and drag it onto the timeline, onto the video clip(s). Next to Amount of Tint choose 100.0% (or less if you prefer some color in the video).

Select the arrow next to Video Effects, and then select the arrow right next to “Noise and Grain”. Click on the word Noise and drag it onto the timeline, onto the video clip(s). Next to Amount of Noise choose 6.0% (or more or less – your preference).

Step 7: Uncheck Video Sound

On the timeline, click on the speaker in the box next to Audio 1 so that the speaker goes away. It can’t be a silent film if you can hear people talking/laughing/screaming in terror/etc.

Step 8: Add Piano Music

Drag the audio file onto the timeline (as you did with the video clips). Cut the audio with the razor tool, just like you did with the video clips.
