Art of Vulnerability

Vulnerability- the state of being vulnerable or exposed

What a terrible definition, in my opinion.  If you go to Google.com and search the definition of vulnerability, the above is what is stated. The major problem I am finding with it is that they say it is the state of “being exposed”. Sure, its a basic way of telling the world what vulnerability is. it gets the job done I guess, but it makes it seem like it is a bad thing to be vulnerable.

A better way to define vulnerability– “the art of exposing oneself”

I created this one. Art is all about expression, and expressing all your feelings is what I think makes a person vulnerable. Whether you are happy, sad, angry, etcetera, being comfortable about feeling and showing emotion is important. It can be such a true form of self-expression. As important as it may be though, its unbelievably hard for me, and many others I am sure.

During the creation of my project, I want to completely strip myself of this feeling. I want to create something to show my true colors because behind my calm and content demeanor, I have some skeletons in my closet just like everyone else does. Don’t let your imagination get the best of you, though. I don’t mean that I have some big secret scandal happening in my life, just random, semi-normal problems. They may not be the biggest issues, but expressing my feelings about everything, including both my struggles and my happiness, is what vulnerability is all about in my eyes.

It’s time that I reveal myself to the fullest extent and become an artist through self-expression.  I’ll mark this as the beginning of my journey to becoming vulnerable and I invite you all to look into my life through the pictures, words, and other media I use while creating my project.

Your definition brings to mind an old picture I had hanging in my room years ago: http://pdxcityclub.org/system/files/nodeimages/Expose-Yourself-to-Art.jpg

I am very interested in what parts of you and your life we are going to get a closer look at!
